If I hold shift while starting up I can get my Mac into safe mode and backup using time machine. However I cannot access my Windows 7 boot camp partition. When I got to Disk Utility on the Mac (while in Safe mode), the boot camp drive is there in the list but I can't make a disk image of it, or try to copy it with restore. Press and hold the power button on your Mac until the startup options window appears showing available startup disks and Options. Select a startup disk. Press and hold the Shift key, click Continue in Safe Mode, then release the Shift key. To leave safe mode, restart your Mac normally, without pressing and holding any keys during startup. This boot menu allows you to select the boot option you want depending on the task you want to accomplish. It contains options such as Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt. For example, Safe Mode is a boot option best for troubleshooting problems and removing viruses because it only allows a limited number of applications to run.
