Not sure if this is the right place for posting this, but I recently got my hands on a 17' PowerBook G4 with a wiped hard drive. I have a.dmg of 10.4 that I'm trying to write to a USB flash drive so I can boot from it and install Tiger. I don't have access to any system running OS X so I can't. Apple Mac OS X Install Disc 1&2, Version 10.4.7 Tiger 2006, AHT Ver 3A112. If installation does not start on its own after inserting the Disc/Disc 1 in the drive, install the game manually: 1) Insert the Disc in your disc drive. 2) Go to your Start Menu Computer (or My Computer in Windows XP). 3) Find the CD or DVD drive that contains the disc. Double-click to Open. A new window will display the contents of the game.
I am trying to install Tiger on an Imac via an Iomega external dvd drive and not had any success. The Imac shows Tiger is present in the StartUp dialogue box and I can select it and choose restart. However nothing happens. Has anybody any suggestions?

I think that you are lost. This is the discussion area for the iBook G4.
You probably want to post in the iMac CRT G3 discussion area.
Is this a USB DVD drive or a FireWire DVD drive? The iMac can not boot OS X from a USB drive of any kind.

My wife has a g3 iBook running 10.3.9. I have a g4 powerbook running 10.49. I want to upgrade my wife's system to 10.4 so we can have network security. Unfortunately her computer has only a cd drive and the install disks I have are dvd. I've tried connecting my computer to hers via both ethernet and fiewire target mode. I can move files onto her machine except for invisible files via firewire but they won't install - error 999. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Hi
Unfortunately, your install DVD won't be able to install the OS onto her iBook as grey disks are machine-specific. She needs to get the Full Retail Version of Mac OS X 10.4 which, normally, comes on a black DVD with a silver X on it. However you can get 10.4 on CDs from AppleRescue
If you're willing to buy an external DVD Writer, you could get the 10.4.6 DVD from Apple or look on http://www.amazon.com for 10.4. Either way, you would then need the Mac OS X 10.4.9 PPC Combo Updater to get up-to-date.

Edit: Just had a look at the tutorial, shows what I know (little)I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.
Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
1) Right click on the installer and choose 'Show Package Contents'.
2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML.It seems that the new version of Itunes has conflicted with my CD/DVD drive because when I uninstalled and re installed the itunes my drive has stopped working and I now have an error code of 19 - Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19) I have tried to update drivers but I am up to date, I have installed and re installed my drive this did not solve the problem. I am now at a loss as to what to do I have had a live chat with microsoft and they could not reslove it all they wanted to do was sell me another service!!! Could installing an older version of itunes solve this issue?
See TS2308: iTunes for Windows: Optical drive is no longer recognized, or 'Disc burner or software not found' alert after install.

Hi, guys, I have had the exact same problem since the summer of 2010. Here's what I was able to find out.
Deleting upper/lower filters, running all those Fix Ya programs and other Microsoft crap is useless. This problem is most certainly has nothing to do with registry of any software on your computer. I took my HP 9620us to a couple of repair places and, they tried a lot of things and it appears that the root of this problem is a faulty motherboard connection. Of course, it costs about 400 bucks to fix it so I'm not sure I want to pay this kind of money.
Anyway, if somebody was able to fix it PLEASE post here to let us know. Again I am 99 per cent sure it's some piece of hardware in the motherboard.I am not sure that I submitted this with the right boxes ticked, so i am re submitting it!

DP 2.5 G5 Mac OS X (10.3.8)How do I install office:mac home &student on my imac without a disk drive?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
If you have Microsoft Office for Mac on a DVD, you have two options:
1. Buy an external optical drive, connect it to the iMac and use it to install Office.
2. If you have another Mac or PC, use Remote Disc > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5287?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Both options are valid, but the option to install it from an external optical drive is much better. It's faster than installing it with Remote DiscHi folks.
My trusty 867mhz G4 Quicksilver Powermac drive has finally konked out. It was running OS 9.2.2 before. Now I want to install Tiger as the OS.
Having only a CD drive (nope, can't read or write DVD's), how do I proceed to install Tiger (I have the original install disk) onto the brand new blank hard drive?
Possible tools that I have:
1) last generation 1.67mhz G4 powerbook
2) dual 2.5ghz G5 powermac
3) Lacie external firewire DVD drive
Things I have tried:
1) hold down 'c' while starting up the Quicksilver with the Lacie DVD drive hooked up to it, hoping I can start up from the optical drive, which contains the Tiger install disk. Result: blank white screen that goes nowhere. Found out that the Lacie needs at least 10.3.9 to run.
I'm out of ideas.
Can someone tell me the right way to do this? Thanks guys.
Didn't sleep at all last night, BUT, I did it!
1) Set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to my G4 1.67GHZ Powerbook. Result = frozen blue screen.
3) Set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to my dual 2.5GHZ G5 Power Mac. Result = frozen blue screen
So that got me thinking, the common thing about the Powerbook and Power Mac is that they both run Leopard. It makes sense to me that computers that already have Leopard installed will probably not run a Tiger installer.
So, I whip out the oldest and slowest computer I have, which is an old 550MHZ Titanium Powerbook, complete with 1 broken hinge, flickering screen and peeled paint. It runs Tiger. I set the Quicksilver as a firewire target disk hooked up to the Titanium Powerbook.
Voila! It works like a charm!
So for anyone facing the same problem, one of the possibilities is: you can do it with the computer set as a firewire target disk hooked up to another computer running nothing newer than Tiger.
Thanks again for your help guys!
